Choose how you arrive: a welcome, / to search, and faces on every change

TL;DR: First-time visitors to the entry portal and this AstroLog now choose a light, a pace and a contrast before they arrive, can press / to search everything, can open a welcome guide any time, and see who made each change. The drifting spores and their mycelium threads now have an on/off switch of their own.

Choose how you arrive

The first time you open the entry portal or this AstroLog, a short welcome asks how you’d like to arrive:

  • A light. Every look here comes from a spore print. Spore Print is the violet-black a cap leaves on paper overnight, Print Paper is the white card it’s taken on, and Candlelight is amber and old gold, the sanctuary after dark. A fourth choice, Follow the day, moves through them: paper by day, candlelight at dusk, spore print by night.
  • A pace. Still lets the spores settle and stops everything. Drift is the field as it’s always been. Flush brings more spores, longer threads and a brighter puff of spore dust. If your device asks for reduced motion, Still is chosen for you.
  • A contrast. More contrast strengthens text and edges and quiets the spores behind the words.
  • Cursor effects. Move your pointer and mycelium threads reach out to the spores nearby, the way a mushroom’s network grows underground. A pointer button in the header, beside the pause button, switches the threads and spore dust off on their own, and they rest whenever motion is Still.

The answer is remembered in your browser only, and it carries between the entry portal and this AstroLog.

Press / on any page, or Ctrl K (⌘K on a Mac), and start typing: every changelog entry, every library write-up, the people who made them, the main pages of psanctuary.org, and the member network. Typing light, still or contrast changes the page itself. On the entry portal the same search reaches into this AstroLog. On a phone, tap the magnifier in the header.

The welcome guide

The light and motion drawer in the header (and the ? key) opens an eight-step guide: what each site is, how the changelog differs from the library, how to search, how to pick a light, motion and contrast, who made the changes, where the community talks, and the way to psanctuary.org. Each step lights one gill of a little cap, so a finished tour lights all eight. The community step points to the church’s member network on Mighty Networks, the way psanctuary.org describes it, and links the page that explains how to join. One space is left open on purpose: a few words of welcome from the church, whenever someone would like to write them.

Faces on every change

Each entry now shows who made it, by first name: the GitHub profile picture when the person has one linked, and a small spore print with their initials when they don’t. Eric and Alana appear early, so the community can see how the record will look as more people take part.

One kit for every page

All of this comes from one stylesheet and one script, served from the entry portal and loaded by both sites, so they can’t drift apart. The spore field moved there too, so the portal and this AstroLog share the very same spores.

Also new: a proper not-found page for this AstroLog, which guesses what you were looking for and always leads back.
